What are High Speed Doors and How are they Used?

Certain environments call for specific entrances and exits, that will keep the space inside exactly the way it should be. High speed doors are often used in commercial environments, opening and shutting at a very fast speed to give you all the convenience you need from your commercial door. There are various options available in the UK marketplace, each of which will offer its own benefits to your business.

What is a high speed door?

A high speed door is a type of roller shutter door that opens and closes especially quickly. As a roller shutter door, it will roll upwards when you want to open it, gathering behind the opening, and then rolling down in exactly the same way when you want to close the door again. This is how a high speed door works:

  1. The door is opened electrically, with a remote control, button or other means of operation. This makes them convenient to open as you can do it without having to roll the door up manually, a process that can work in some environments but that is going to take significantly longer.
  2. The door is connected up to the mains and will begin to roll upwards when it is programmed to open. It will roll up like a sheet of material, much like rolling up a sheet of paper, except that the material will be much stronger, like steel or aluminium. This usually happens behind the door opening, keeping it neater and more aesthetically pleasing. Doors of this nature can open very quickly, sometimes in as little as two seconds.
  3. The door will remain in place behind the opening, giving you a clear entrance into the building. When you want to roll the door down again, all you need to do is repeat the process, pressing a button on a remote control or near to the door (perhaps on the wall or in a control panel.)

What environments might a high speed door be used in?

High speed doors are specialist pieces of equipment and as such won’t be installed in general areas without a need for one to be used. Generally they will be used in industry to offer some kind of benefit, perhaps keeping the room at a consistent temperature inside. This is very useful for warehouses where items need to be kept chilled, so if you have a refrigerated space, a high speed door is essential if you need entry into it. It is generally useful if you have stock that needs to be kept in good condition – maintaining a constant temperature is a good idea all round.

High speed doors are also installed in environments where convenience is important. Warehouses and factories are particularly popular, as you might need to allow forklift trucks and palette trucks to go in and out. A high speed door allows them to do so quickly and easily, without having to wait around for a manual door to be opened. This helps with your general operations and can be a good way to streamline your business processes.
