How to Remedy Smoke Damage

Smoke damage to the walls or ceilings is always unpleasant to clean and can be vexing. If you are committed to smoke damage repair, there is some hard work, but it will depend on the extent and type of damage done by the smoke.

Soot and Charring

Smoke damage can cause black marks and discoloration to your ceiling or walls. The smoke leaves soot as the residue. The actual burning of the paint is called charring. You should assess the extent of the damage beforehand and decide whether cleaning is the best option. Sometimes it is difficult, if not impossible, to remove the charring and soot from flat-painted walls. In such a case, repainting and priming is the only option. But if it is satin or semi-gloss finish, and the charring hasn’t gone deep, then there is more hope.

Bubbling and Blistering

The paint on your walls or your ceiling may bubble or blister if there is excessive heat. While a bubble or blister cannot be undone, it can be repaired. What you need to do is to gently scrape off the top of the blister or bubble with a putty knife, then sand the bubble or blister until it is flat, and then spackle the place to seal any imperfections or indents. When the spackle is wholly dry, again sand the spackled area to smoothness and flush with the ceiling or wall. Lastly, prime and paint that area.

Smoke Odour

Smoke can leave behind a pungent odour clinging to the walls. The smoke odours may be so stubborn. There are a variety of methods a home owner can use to eliminate smoke odour caused by smoke. For example, wiping down furniture, washable walls and floors with white vinegar will expunge the nauseating odour from your room. Sprinkling baking soda liberally over furniture, floors and walls can also absorb the annoying smell. Activated charcoal, ozone generators and febreeze are other worthy alternatives you can try to expel the smell of smoke from your home.

However, if the smoke odour has managed to permeate into the carpets, draperies, furnishings and other soft stuff in the room, then there is little that can be done in ways listed above to eliminate the smoke unless the items are removed or replaced.

Additional Options for Repairing Smoke Damage

The other option for clearing smoke damage is to use Trisodium Phosphate because it works excellently well in cleaning smoke damage. Be wary though that Trisodium Phosphate is a very harsh chemical, and, thus, it is not available in all areas. You can check with a nearby home improvement store to find possible alternate smoke cleaning solutions.

However, if what you have is severe damage as a result of the smoke, then it is wise to call in a smoke damage professional. So many people hesitate to contact a smoke damage professional because they deem the process to be too costly. And where the smoke damage professional will be using ozone neutralisers, many recoil with fear knowing it will be dangerous and hazardous to the environment. Luckily, there are companies that offer smoke damage repair employing safe and environmental-friendly procedures and chemicals. You can find such a company to assist you to remedy smoke damage.
