Points to consider when planning an extension

If you feel that you are outgrowing your home, rather than move you may decide to build an extension. Extensions can be great ways to give you the extra space you need without the costs and upheaval of moving home and they can also add a huge chunk on to the value of your home.

Before you start planning your extension, you need to think carefully about what type of extension you need and how big it should be. Often adding an additional meter on to the size of the extension I not going to cost much more so you may want to build it as big as the you possible can in the space you have available.

If you want to have a double extension then you will need to ensure that the ground level foundations are dug deep enough to allow for the extra weight on top. You will need to apply for planning permission for the extension and will often need to submit plans that have been drawn up showing the exact dimensions of the proposed extension. Think carefully about the room or rooms you are extending on to as it may be that you are going to be getting rid of the only window in that room.
